Art is defined in the dictionary as the expression of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture. But can we really use a word to describe Art?? Who decides if something is or isn’t Art? Well, for this blog post I decided to talk with Artist Rigo León, and learn more about what Art means to him. Rigo is a Cuban Artist based in Miami, FL, influenced by the greatest Artists from Cuba as well as around the world. Sitting down with Rigo and talking a little about Art, to learn how he uses Art and what inspires him.
La Niña Bonita-Is there something specific that inspires you?
Rigo- The universe, visions, and ideas related to actual or past events, everything starts with a name or concept.
La Niña Bonita- If you would have to pick between painting murals or paintings, which one would you pick?
Rigo- At this stage in my career I want to paint more murals, my message travels faster that way, I get to connect more with the public and the elements, the connection with the wall is almost like a relationship, very personal, but I don’t have a preference.
La Niña Bonita- If you could choose one place in the world to paint a mural, where would it be?
Rigo- Anywhere in the world that needs color.
La Niña Bonita- Describe your style in one word.
Rigo- Perceptual.
La Niña Bonita- Do you think you would be able to convey the same message from one of your paintings in another form of art, like music, a play, animation, etc.? If yes, how would you do it?
Rigo- I’ve been experimenting with music, video 3D painting, animation and other different platforms for years combining video installation with mural and other medias.
La Niña Bonita- Do you think Art is something commercial or is something deeper than that?
Rigo- Art in general is deeper than even your own self, commercial or not, the fact that we created something out of a little spark in your brain, and that feeling of satisfaction in your heart is what we call Art, which is life.
Rigo leaves us with this last thought, ” You are responsible to create the life you want to live. I dedicated my art in particular, to the immigrants around the world, people who have left their countries in search for a better life, pushing forward in tough times to create new homes, new identities, to create the life they dream. Since I was a little kid, I dreamt about traveling the world like Simbad, the sailor, and Jule’s Verne’s books, hunting treasures and mysteries. As I look at the horizon I realize this is not a dream anymore, is reality and I am living the dream.”
I completely agree with him, we have to dream and we have to live our dream. Life is full of Art and we should make it part of our lifes even if you are not an Artist professionally everything comes down to what Rigo says, “building your dreams.”
